I Tested My Shower Water After Months of Dry, Flaky Skin. Here’s What I Wish I’d Told My Clients Sooner.
I work with 26 clients a week as a licensed esthetician. I had questions about every product touching their faces. Somehow, I never considered their shower water.

I’ve heard every excuse for breakouts and dry, flaky skin in my 10 years of working as a licensed esthetician.
I’d seen clients with breakouts that returned every month and skin that looked oily by noon but felt tight the second they washed their face.
I asked what they used, looked up the ingredients, and helped them figure out what to change.
Then a few years ago, my own skin started doing things I couldn’t explain.
My cheeks felt tight every night. The skin around my mouth started to sting. And the eczema I hadn’t dealt with since I was nineteen came back on my elbows and started spreading toward my wrists.
I spent my days helping people feel better about their skin. Then I went home and worried about mine.
So I followed the same advice I gave my clients.
- I replaced my cleanser with a $68 fragrance-free formula.
- I bought a richer $92 barrier cream and a $54 overnight mask.
- I simplified my routine, but still spent about $165 on gentler products.
- I kept moisturizer beside every sink and in my treatment-room drawer, going through roughly $85 worth each month.
- I followed the care plan I had been given, including a $175 follow-up appointment and another $140 in recommended products.
The timing bothered me. I would step out of the shower and reach for my towel, already feeling the tightness across my cheeks. I hadn’t even touched my skincare yet.
So I started asking clients how their skin felt after showering. Several knew exactly what I meant.
Then a client in her late 50s, with the kind of skin you ask questions about, mentioned she’d changed her showerhead.
I was expecting the name of a moisturizer.
She told me how much more comfortable her skin felt and suggested I test my shower water.
I went home thinking about that. I could tell you what was in every bottle on my bathroom counter. I had no idea what was coming out of the shower above it.
The Hidden Dangers In Your Shower Nobody Warns You About

I started researching shower water the same way I research a product for a client: What is in it? What does it leave behind? And what happens when skin is exposed to it every day?
Here is what I found:
- Roughly 85% of US homes have hard water.
Most people have never tested theirs, so they have no idea whether mineral-heavy water is running over their skin every morning.
- Nearly every public water system uses chlorine or chloramine to disinfect water before it reaches your home.
It does its job in the pipes. Then it arrives at your face, scalp, and body.
- Around 240,000 water main breaks happen every year in the US.
That creates more opportunities for sediment, rust, and other material to enter the water before it reaches your shower.
- The EPA allows chlorine residuals up to 4 milligrams per liter in treated water.
That is considered safe to drink. But “safe to drink” is not the same thing as “ideal for a skin barrier that already feels dry and irritated.”
- Millions of lead service lines are still in the ground.
And unless you own the building, you probably have no idea what kind of pipes connect your home to the main line.
- The American Society of Civil Engineers gives US drinking-water infrastructure a C-.
The water may come out clear. That does not mean nothing is coming with it.
The part that got my attention was this:
I had spent years studying every ingredient my clients put on their skin. I had never looked at the water they stood under every day.
I had a filtered pitcher in my refrigerator. I checked labels before recommending a moisturizer. I knew exactly which cleansers were too harsh for compromised skin.
But the thing touching my face first every morning?
I had never tested it.
And once I did, I could not stop thinking about how many clients were spending hundreds of dollars trying to fix skin that was being exposed to the same water twice a day.
Why your skin and hair feel worse after a shower.
It makes dry skin harder to calm down.
Chlorine can strip some of the oils that help keep moisture in and irritants out. I saw it in the clients who moisturized constantly but still felt tight after washing. I saw it around the nose, across the cheeks, and in the dry patches surrounding breakouts.
It keeps putting the skin back under stress.
A hot shower can be a lot for an already-irritated barrier. The water feels good while you are in it. Then the tightness, flaking, and itching show up when you step out. By the time someone applies their serum or moisturizer, the skin is already trying to recover.
It leaves a film on the hair.
Hard-water minerals can build up on the hair shaft, which is why some clients shampoo twice and still say their hair feels coated. Their products were not necessarily wrong. They were trying to work through residue that was already sitting on the strand. Hair felt rougher, flatter, and harder to manage.
That changed the way I looked at not only my skin, but my hair too.
A client’s routine does not start with their cleanser or shampoo. It starts with the water touching their skin.
This is where I got stuck, and it is probably where you are stuck too.
Once I realized the water is part of the problem, I started looking at solutions.
Whole-home systems cost thousands to install, take up space, and require a plumber. That was not realistic for my clients, especially renters or anyone living in an apartment.
I looked at basic inline shower filters too. Most used a single cartridge, needed frequent replacement, or turned a normal shower into a weak stream.
I did not need another expensive product sitting on my bathroom counter. I needed to filter the water at the exact point it touched my skin.
Something that installed in minutes. Kept the pressure strong. Had a replaceable filter. And worked with the showerhead I was already using.
Meet eskiin: the 15-stage filtered showerhead I recommend to every client now.
When I looked into eskiin, the founders’ story sounded familiar. Wes St. Amand had eczema. His sister Maddie was struggling with hair loss. Their search for answers led them to shower water, and eventually to building their own filtered showerhead.
I understood why they kept looking. I had a bathroom full of products and still had questions.
eskiin replaces your existing showerhead and runs water through a 15-stage filtration system before it reaches your skin and hair. Inside, different materials do different jobs:
- KDF-55 media helps reduce chlorine and certain heavy metals.
- Calcium sulfite helps reduce chlorine in shower water.
- Coconut activated carbon helps reduce chlorine and odors.
- PP cotton layers catch sediment, including rust particles and dirt.
The filtration was what interested me as an esthetician. The pressure mattered to me as someone who still wanted to rinse conditioner out of her hair. eskiin’s wall-mount showerhead offers up to 2.5x stronger pressure, according to the brand.
I wanted to give my skin filtered water without making my routine more complicated.
A showerhead I could install in minutes and maintain with replacement cartridges was something I could actually fit into my life.
My Skin Felt Different After The First Shower
- First shower. I reached for moisturizer out of habit. Then I paused. My cheeks weren’t doing that tight, uncomfortable thing. I actually smiled to check.
- Week 2. The flakes around my mouth were less noticeable. Makeup went on smoother. I leaned into the bathroom mirror, looking for the patches I usually tried to cover.
- Week 4. My skin felt comfortable between showers. I was still using the same cleanser and moisturizer. For once, I had no reason to shop for another one.
I spend my days paying attention to everything that touches someone’s face. Somehow, I had overlooked the water touching mine every morning.

A fresh filter beside mine after 90 days of showers.
Of course it deserved a closer look. I just hadn’t expected to notice so much.
At my next appointments, I started telling clients who struggled with dryness about eskiin and what I’d noticed. Some decided to try it.
Then they came back.
After that, I started hearing the same story from my clients.
“My skin does not feel as tight after I shower.”
“I’m not reaching for lotion immediately anymore.”
“I have not changed products in weeks.”
I asked what else had changed. I looked at their routines. I paid attention to the skin in front of me and to what they told me happened at home.
I was not looking for a miracle story. I was looking for the small changes that repeat when people stop fighting the same problem every day.
I stopped blaming my clients for having difficult skin. I started asking what their skin was being washed in.
What I Noticed When My Clients Came Back.

You already put care into your skin. Don’t skip the first step.
Since you made it this far, You clearly put thought into what touches your skin. Here are a few more reasons I think shower water deserves some of that attention:
Upgrade Your Shower For Less Than 55 Cents A Day:
Instead of spending on another skincare product cycle, here is what the fix cost instead. With the Summer Sale the showerhead is $115 instead of $149*, which comes out to about* 31 cents a day over a year. Filters run 33¢ a day on the Wall Mount and 44¢ on the Handheld*, shipping free, cancel whenever you want.* The whole thing lands under a dollar a day. I was spending nearly three times that fighting the water instead of removing it.
Keep The Products You Already Love:
You have probably spent years finding a cleanser that agrees with your skin or a conditioner that works for your hair. Trying eskiin does not require buying into an entirely new skincare line. You can filter your shower water while keeping the routine you know.
Look Beyond The Bathroom Aesthetic:
A beautiful bottle can make a product feel more convincing. A polished showerhead can do the same. I want to know what happens after the packaging is gone: what the filter is designed to reduce, what replacement cartridges cost, and how often they need changing. Those are the details worth comparing before you buy.

Try eskiin for 60 days. Wes and Maddie will cover the risk.
Wes and Maddie built this after watching chemicals and mineral buildup do to their skin and hair exactly what a new apartment did to mine. They know how long you have been trying things that did not work.
Your first 60 days are fully protected. Install it, shower normally, and watch your skin and hair.
If you are not thrilled, email support@eskiin.com and we refund every penny. One email is all it takes.

Questions I hear from my clients
Will this clear my acne?
eskiin filters shower water. Acne has several causes, and a shower filter is not an acne treatment. Keep following your skin-care plan and speak with a dermatologist about persistent or painful breakouts. Filtration is something you can consider as part of how you care for your skin during the wash.
My face feels dry even though I moisturize. Should I look at my shower?
Yes. Start with the water temperature and how long you shower, then consider how your cleanser feels on your skin. Applying moisturizer while your skin is still damp can help. If you want to reduce chlorine in the water coming through the showerhead, that is where a filter comes in.
I wash my face at the sink. Does this filter that water?
The showerhead filters water coming through your shower. To filter the water you use at the sink, you need a filter designed for that faucet.
I have hard water. Will eskiin soften it?
A water softener reduces dissolved hardness minerals such as calcium and magnesium. eskiin is designed to reduce chlorine and other targeted impurities. If your goal is to lower water hardness, you’ll need a system designed for that purpose.
Will I still get a satisfying shower?
eskiin combines filtration with a showerhead designed for a strong rinse. The spray you experience depends on your model and your home’s water supply. You can try it in your own bathroom under the 60-day guarantee.
Do I have to subscribe?
You can choose a one-time purchase. Autoship is available if you would like replacement filters delivered on schedule. Review the refill price and delivery interval for your selected model before ordering; shipments can be adjusted or canceled.
