I started researching shower water the same way I research a product for a client: What is in it? What does it leave behind? And what happens when skin is exposed to it every day?

Here is what I found:

1. Roughly 85% of US homes have hard water.

   Most people have never tested theirs, so they have no idea whether mineral-heavy water is running over their skin every morning.

2. Nearly every public water system uses chlorine or chloramine to disinfect water before it reaches your home.

   It does its job in the pipes. Then it arrives at your face, scalp, and body.

3. Around 240,000 water main breaks happen every year in the US.

   That creates more opportunities for sediment, rust, and other material to enter the water before it reaches your shower.

4. The EPA allows chlorine residuals up to 4 milligrams per liter in treated water.

   That is considered safe to drink. But “safe to drink” is not the same thing as “ideal for a skin barrier that already feels dry and irritated.”

5. Millions of lead service lines are still in the ground.

   And unless you own the building, you probably have no idea what kind of pipes connect your home to the main line.

6. The American Society of Civil Engineers gives US drinking-water infrastructure a C-.

   The water may come out clear. That does not mean nothing is coming with it.

The part that got my attention was this:

I had spent years studying every ingredient my clients put on their skin. I had never looked at the water they stood under every day.

I had a filtered pitcher in my refrigerator. I checked labels before recommending a moisturizer. I knew exactly which cleansers were too harsh for compromised skin.

But the thing touching my face first every morning?

I had never tested it.

And once I did, I could not stop thinking about how many clients were spending hundreds of dollars trying to fix skin that was being exposed to the same water twice a day.
