I started researching shower water the same way I research a product for a client: What is in it? What does it leave behind? And what happens when hair is exposed to it every day?

Here is what I found:

4. The EPA allows chlorine residuals up to 4 milligrams per liter in treated water.

   That is considered safe to drink. But “safe to drink” is not the same thing as “ideal for hair that is already feeling damaged.”

5. Millions of lead service lines are still in the ground.

   And unless you own the building, you probably have no idea what kind of pipes connect your home to the main line.

6. The American Society of Civil Engineers gives US drinking-water infrastructure a C-.

   The water may come out clear. That does not mean nothing is coming with it.

I kept thinking about clients who’d replaced every product and given up heat styling, yet still hated how their hair felt.

I knew their routines down to the pillowcase. I’d never asked about their water.

At home, I filtered my drinking water and kept a small fortune in salon products beside the shower. Testing what came out of it hadn’t crossed my mind.

So I checked mine. The hardness reading sent me digging into mineral buildup, then chlorine and the other impurities reaching my hair with every wash.
